What is Lapis?
Often referred to as lapis lazuli, lapis is Latin for stone and azula which comes from the Arabic for blue. Lapis is a dramatically deep blue gemstone favored to make very decorative jewelry in Ancient Egypt. The Egyptians used this gem to make signet rings, chains, and scarabs.
This beautiful gemstone has flecks of pyrite that gives it a golden luminescence. Said to bring harmony, it symbolizes friendship and truth. In the Middle East it is thought to have magical powers.
It is believed that Cleopatra’s deep blue eye shadow was made of finely ground lapis.
